Purpose
What it is:
The purpose of this certification service is twofold. First, it allows flight simulator pilots, hereafter referred to as "virtual pilots", a way to gauge and record their piloting skill level. In the same way that real world pilots have different licensing levels and ratings they may obtain to prove their skill level, virtual pilots may obtain different types, or levels, of certification through this program. Second, it allows Virtual Airlines a way to certify that their pilots are sufficiently skilled to operate their aircraft. Many VAs already have internal procedures for verifying this through checkrides or aircraft restrictions for junior pilots. But for those which don't have these programs in place or do not wish to maintain the overhead of such a process, this service is available. In addition, this service is an ideal way for VAs to verify experience for new pilots who have experience at other VAs.
What it is not:
This service is not intended to be a virtual version of the FAA. We are not regulating anything nor are we are issuing "virtual licenses" here. We are merely providing a common knowledge base for virtual pilots and virtual airlines. We see this service as a natural addition to Steve's Flight School and hope that many of you take advantage of it.
Certification Levels
There are four levels of
certification available through this program. They range from the beginner level Recreational Virtual Pilot certification to the advanced Air Transport Virtual Pilot certification. Obviously, the advanced
levels require more knowledge and/or experience by the pilot than do the beginning levels. Each level, except the first of course, requires either a previous level of certification or a waiver for that level
