As you've approached the runway on your final approach, you've probably heard some warning indicators sound. These
are the marker beacons which are part of the ILS. The outer marker is situated anywhere from 4-7 miles, usually around where a plane will be in line for it's final appraoch.. This would also
light up the blue light on the instrument panel. The middle marker, is located about 3500 feet from the runway. The light on the instrument panel is amber for the middle marker. Last is the inner marker. It
is located approximately 200 feet off the runway at what is called 'decision height'. It is a white color light on the instrument panel. This is the height at which you must decide if you can land the plane.
Not all runways are equipped with all marker beacons. You can also hear the marker beacons sound on departure as you cross them. It is a good idea to lower the landing gear at the outer marker. |
