Lesson 2,   San Jose Airport to San Francisco

Go to the USA-San Francisco area in "World -go to Airport" menu and select the San Jose Int'l airport. You'll will be on a runway pointed at 303 degress. [FS98 users choose runway 30L] You'll be flying to San Francisco  Int'l. you plan on landing on runway 28R which happens to have a heading of 282 degrees. Set your NAV-2 for SFO's VOR frequency of 115.8 Tune your lower circular dial to 282. [FS98 users should remember that your NAV radios will not work till you are around 2000 feet and within range of the VOR or ILS you are tracking. To set your OBS to 282 turn the OBS knob till the compass shows 282 at the top. The SFO VOR should come alive around 24 miles from SFO] You'll wind up flying towards the airport at the same heading as you want to land. Needle will be off to the right(it centers at 289, you want to fly such that it moves   left and centers at 282.  It Just so happens you'll be  taking off at 303 degrees, so all you have to do is take off and keep flying 303 degrees. Eventually the needle will move left until it's centered when the dial is set at 282 degrees. Then you turn a little left from 303 degrees to 282 degrees and your plane will be aimed at SFO airport) (the needle will center faster at 282 if you fly at a heading greater then 303. i.e. if you take off and veer right to say, 315 degrees initially that forces the needle to center at 282 faster than if you fly at 303 degrees). Set your NAV-1 for the runway-28R localizer frequency of 111.7. (FIG 4)  Tune your upper circular dial to the same 282, [FS98 users should turn the OBS knob till the compass shows 282 at the top] (FIG 5) although that does not matter. tuning the heading has no affect on the needle centering when tuning to a localizer. It just helps you remember the heading of the runway. Once your lower dial, which is giving you info about the SFO's VOR, is centered at 282, then you're close enough in heading to begin trying to get the upper dial's needle centered. If you can get that upper-dial-needle centered while flying 282 degrees, you'll be aimed directly at the center of runway 28R. Turn autopilot on by pressing Z on the keyboard,  [FS98 users can press the AP button on the Radio stack] plus localizer-lock by pressing CTRL-O [FS98 users can press the APP button on the radio stack]   but try it on your own. Have fun on your 27 mile journey to San Francisco And if you haven't flown around SF in flt sim,  you can take back off and proceed further north, The areas around the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge are stunning...
