Lesson 3,  Another Flight for Beginners

Now that you have a basic understanding of how to get from Airport A to Airport B let's try another simple flight.. Under 'go to airport', choose, USA NewYork and then choose JFK runway 31L. This will put you on a heading of 310 degrees.. We're going to Fly to LaGuardia (LGA) if you look at the map of the New york area, you'll see that since we'll be flying a heading of 310 degrees, we would pass LGA off to our right. next look at the runway listings for LGA. lets decide to land on runway 4, since it will be easy to intercept. Lets set NAV2 radio to the VOR of LGA (113.1) and lets set NAV1 to the ILS localizer for runway 4 (110.5) (FIG 1)

(FIG 1)

We know that runway 4 has a heading of appx 40 degrees.. lets set the top number in both OBI gauges to 040. [FS98 users should adjust the OBS knob till the compass is showing 040 at the top] (FIG 2) As we take off, stay on your heading  of   of about 310 degrees. (FIG 3) Climb to about 2000 feet.(FIG 4)After 8 or 9 miles you should see the arrow on the top OBI gauge begin to center . This will be about 5 miles from the runwayThe lower OBI gauge may center sooner

Fig 2

but remember, that only takes us to the VOR at the airport, we want to find a specific runway(FIG 5) As the top needle begins to center, make a turn to heading 040. This should put you close to being in line with the runway. You may have to make some adjustments because it takes a while for the plane to turn.   Follow your glide slope

indicators and try to get the plane lined up

with the runway, Also watch the glide slope which will tell you if you're too high or too low on your approach. (FIG 6) Try to fly the plane in manually without the auto pilot. The throttle can be used to help you climb or descend.. cut back on the throttle if you want to descend, and increase power if you want to climb. remember, small adjustments are best. Watch the angle of the nose of plane. Also watch the airspeed. A good landing speed for the cessna will be between 60 and 75 knots (FIG 7).In this short flight, the glide slope indicator will be active from the time you depart JFK,  so you can tell

exactly whether you're too high or low on your flight. [FS98 users, keep in mind the glideslope or VOR's will not be active till you've  reached  approximately 2000 feet] if you don't make it your first time, try it again, It's a short flight and after a few tries you should be able to land at LGA without a problem.
